Locating Background Resources
Search online in DiscoverE or in our Print Reference Collection (located on the 1st floor of the library) to begin your search. Get a start on your research question, look for related search terms, and find more resources in the bibliographies of reference articles to help further your research.
Use reference sources like general and subject specific encyclopedias to find background information about your topic before you search library catalogs and subject databases. Browse the library's Reference Collection (located on the first floor) for background sources.

Online Reference Sources:
- AccessScience
The online version of the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology. Provides full access to articles in the areas of astronomy, biology, chemistry, computer science, genetics, ecology, mathematics, microbiology, physics, materials science, psychology, and neuroscience.
- African American Biographical Database
Biographical information, including photographs and illustrations. Includes profiles and full-text sketches providing both biographical detail and narratives chronicling the lives of Black Americans.
- Associations Unlimited
Contains detailed listings for organizations all over the world. In addition, IRS information on nonprofit organizations has been added to Associations Unlimited, making it the world's largest, most detailed and searchable database available on nonprofit information.
- Biography Resource Center
A database of biographical information on people from throughout history, around the world, and across all disciplines and subject areas. In-depth profiles, thumbnail sketches, and full-text journal articles are included.
- Encyclopaedia Britannica Online
Encyclopaedia Britannica Online includes the complete encyclopedia (articles and illustrations), as well as the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary and the Britannica Book of the Year.
- CQ Researcher Plus Archive
The CQ Researcher focuses on a specific issue each week and provides a comprehensive background on the issue--legislative activity, historical background, current developments, and a bibliography for future research.
- CRC Handbook of Physics and Chemistry
This electronic version of the popular print reference source contains frequently used data in the fields of chemistry and physics.
- Credo Reference Unlimited
Credo Ready-Reference services feature full-text content from hundreds of reference books covering every major subject.
- Literature Resource Center
Provides access to biographies, bibliographies and critical analyses of authors from every age and literary discipline.
- Grove Music Online
The primary English-language reference source for music. Contains articles covering music of all styles, periods, and geographic regions. Features include full text searching and links to images, digital sound, and related internet sites.
- Oxford English Dictionary
A searchable database of the full-text of the second edition of the Oxford English Dictionary.
- Oxford Reference Online
This database includes fully-indexed, cross-searchable full text content from more than 170 subject dictionaries, language reference and subject reference works in the arts, humanities, social sciences and sciences. Also included are English dictionaries and bilingual dictionaries of French, German, Spanish and Italian.

- Congress and the Nation
Essential resource for Congressional activities from 1945-2004.
- CQ Electronic Library
An excellent source for public policy. Includes multiple databases that hold information on voting records, analysis of controversial issues, information on the Supreme Court, directory information, and biographies of politicians and court justices to name just a few.
- Ethnic Newswatch
A full-text collection of U. S. newspapers, magazines, and journals of ethnic, minority, and native presses, searchable in English and Spanish.
- Factiva
Factiva lets you quickly search nearly 8,000 publications in 22 languages, including the world's most prestigious publications, local sources and the Reuters and Dow Jones newswires. In addition, Factiva.com is the exclusive archive of The Wall Street Journal.
- JSTOR
JSTOR, the Journal Storage Project, provides access to digitized versions to complete runs of key scholarly journals in the arts, the humanities, literature, the sciences, the social sciences, and selected scholarly journals in related disciplines such as business, ecology, botany, music, and statistics.
- LexisNexis Academic
Full-text access to news, business, medical, educational and legal sources. The sources include international, national, and regional newspapers; magazines; trade journals; newsletters; wire service reports; and transcripts of television and radio news programs.
- LexisNexis Statistical
Online source of statistical information issued by U.S. Federal & State governments, selected private publications, and major international intergovernmental organizations.
- MasterFile Premier
Covers general interest and current events magazines, as well as general reference, health, and science journals.
- Newspaper Source
Newspaper Source provides current information from daily feeds from the Knight-Ridder/Tribune Business News and Knight-Ridder/Tribune News Service. In addition, full text television & radio news transcripts are provided from CBS News.
- Project Muse
Provides access to scholarly journals published by major university presses. Project MUSE covers the fields of literature and criticism, history, the visual and performing arts, cultural studies, education, political science, gender studies, and many others.
- Research Library
Covers publications from academic journals and popular magazines in the humanities, social sciences, general sciences, and business. Full-text available starting in 1991.
- World News Connection
A Foreign News Service from the U.S. Government that offers translated and English-language news and information. Includes the local media sources in foreign countries and regions. Compiled from thousands of non-U.S. media sources, the information in WNC covers socioeconomic, political, scientific, technical, and environmental issues and events.
