Locating Background Resources

Search online in DiscoverE or in our Print Reference Collection (located on the 1st floor of the library) to begin your search. Get a start on your research question, look for related search terms, and find more resources in the bibliographies of reference articles to help further your research.

Recommended Background Resources:

 
  • Oxford Reference Collection (contains encyclopedias on a variety of subjects, including art and religion; fulltext articles)
  • Grove Art Online (encyclopedia of art and artists from prehistory to 1990's; full-text articles)

Brainstorming synonyms or variations on words yields a more productive search. 
For example, if you are searching for information on art and the birth of Christ, you might also want to look for:

  • art AND Matthew 
  • art AND New Testament

Adjust your searches by narrowing the focus, ex: birth of Christ

OR

combining terms, ex: art AND birth of Christ AND Matthew
