Evaluating and Citing Your Sources

Effective use of the Internet for research requires an understanding of how to critically evaluate the information you find.  The more our students rely on the Internet as their preferred source of information, the more we all need to learn how to use the Internet wisely and discerningly.

Identifying the type of information found on the Internet - Published vs. Net-Originated

  • "Published" = full-text articles published in magazines, journals, and newspapers, whether in print and/or online, and are available online in GALILEO databases or at the publication's website.
  • "Net-originated" = information originally posted to a website.  Unlike "published" information, "net- originated" information may not have been reviewed by editors, peer scholars, or fact-checkers.

Using a balanced mix of "published" and "net-originated" sources of information

  • Instead of relying all on net-originated sources, using tools like GALILEO databases to find published information in magazine, journal and newspaper articles.
