Home Computing
Remote access from off campus are available to Emory users through authentication with an Emory Network ID (NetID) and password. As a standard all Oxford employees need to use Virtual Private Network (VPN) that creates a secured tunnel to connect to Emory Network. Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a computer network that creates secured tunnel for all data transmissions. VPN enables Internet traffic to travel securely over a public network by encrypting all the traffic from one network to another through secure "tunnels." In doing so, this virtual connection looks like an Emory node over the public Internet, allowing users high-speed access to network services through privately provided cable modems or DSL services.
Emory provides VPN access through a web browser which establishes an encrypted remote access connection. These instructions can be used to connect to Emory's network by VPN.
Connecting to Office Computer from Off Campus
Remote Desktop which is included with Windows XP professional can be used to connect to a computer at Emory across the internet from virtually any windows computer, Pocket PC or Smartphone, and access all programs, files, and network resources in the same manner as sitting in front of the computer at work. Two items are needed to create a remote connection to the office computer:
A static IP Address assigned by OCIT is needed which can be acquired by opening a help desk request at AskIT. Depending on where the computer is located, it may also need VPN access. To find out how to access your VPN account, please go to the Virtual Private Networking section of this document.
To setup the Remote Desktop on the host computer, which in this case is the office computer, follow the instructions here.
To set up the remote computer which could be the home computer to connect to the host computer follow the instructions here.
Personal Use of Software For Home
Emory faculty and staff are allowed to install software available on Software Express at https://software.emory.edu on their work computers. Visit this link to view Software Distributions Licensing Agreement.
Emory faculty and staff must purchase specific Work at Home media for installing Microsoft products onto non Emory-owned computers (even if the computer is located on campus). The Work at Home media is good for 2 installs only and costs $10. The media can be found at https://software.emory.edu/workathome/. The special media has a unique serial number on every disk to prevent piracy and any type of illegal use liability by the University. This applies to the products covered under the Microsoft Campus Agreement
