After opening http://classes.emory.edu/ in your web browser go to the right side of the screen where you will see a box labeled "Login Here".  Enter your NetID/Username and your password then select "Login".  You will be redirected to your Blackboard homepage.

Blackboard is course-management software that is used by Oxford faculty and staff. It is internet based, which means that you can access it on and off campus via any web browser. If you use BlackBoard you will be able to:

• Create a grade book
• Create tests and monitor results
• Create/monitor course discussion boards
• Create course announcements
• Create assignnments
• Create learning units
• Use your account to contact any student enrolled in the class
• Plus much more

Emory Users: Now that Blackboard is tied into the other UTS university resources, if you would like to CHANGE your email address you will need to access PEACH (Preferred Email Address Change Handler): https://www.app.emory.edu/peach/

You can check your personal information (including your first name and/or last name), access the main My Emory tab within Blackboard and click on Personal Information under the Tools area. Next, click Edit Personal Information.

• To change your Blackboard password you must first login.
• You will then see a blue bar across the top of the Blackboard page. At the top right corner of your browser window you will see "Change Netword ID Password". Select this link to be redirected to the UTS password change form.
• You will need to enter your "NetID", current password, your new password and then confirm your new password.

Select "Change/Maintain Password" to accept or "Cancel" to cancel.

Using your web browser navigate to http://classes.emory.edu/. 

First, make sure you're checking your roster using Control Panel > List/Modify Users.

• If they're not listed, did you request enrollment this semester using the Blackboard request form? If so, send an email to the Blackboard administrators at classes@emory.edu so they can troubleshoot.
• If they are listed, have you made the site AVAILABLE to the students via Control Panel > Settings. If this is not the problem, send an email to the Blackboard administrators at classes@emory.edu.

To add a new tools link to your course (that is, to make "Email" or "Student Gradebook," or some other tool a main link in your course)

1. Click on "Control Panel"
2. Next, click on the "Manage Course Menu" link in the lower left-hand part of your screen
3. You should see a list of all the existing main navigation links before you, along with a series of button options at the top of your screen. Click on the "Tool Area" button
4. In the new screen that appears, select the type of tool you want your link to connect to by selecting an option from the "Area Type" dropdown menu
5. Name your new link by typing a piece of text into the "Area name" field
6. Hit "Submit"

To add an internal link to the main navigation panel of your course (that is, a main navigation link that will connect directly to a specific place within your course, like, say, a particular folder or a learning unit)

1. Click on "Control Panel"
2. Next, click on the "Manage Course Menu" link in the lower left-hand part of your screen
3. You should see a list of all the existing main navigation links before you, along with a series of button options at the top of your screen. Click on the "Course Link" button
4. In the new screen that appears, name your new link by typing in a name into the "Area name" field
5. Next, hit the "Browse" button to designate the exact place in your course that you want this new link to connect to
6. You should see a small course map window pop up (be patient, as this may take a little time); click on the + and - icons on the map to reveal the specific area, folder, or learning unit where you want your new link to point to; once this area is revealed, click on the radio button next to hit, and then hit the "Submit" button at the bottom of the map window
7. Hit "Submit" at the bottom of the page

To add an external link to the main navigation panel of your course (that is, a main navigation button that will connect directly to a specific URL outside your course, like, say, the Oxford College library or Oxford College, etc.)

1. Click on "Control Panel"
2. Next, click on the "Manage Course Menu" link in the lower left-hand part of your screen
3. You should see a list of all the existing main navigation links before you, along with a series of button options at the top of your screen. Click on the "External Link" button
4. In the new screen that appears, name your new button by typing in a name into the "Area name" field
5. In the "Target" field, type in the complete URL for the website that you would like this link to connect to (note: don't forget the "http://" part)
6. Select the "Launch in new window" option
7. Hit "Submit"

Blackboard 6 allows faculty to decide whether they want their main navigation panel to consist of button links (as in previous versions of Blackboard) or text links. Text links take up less space on the page; however, buttons are sometimes more visible to students. To designate whether your course will feature buttons or text links,

1. Go to the "Control Panel"
2. Click on the "Settings" link down in the bottom left-hand corner of your screen
3. Click on the "Course Design" option
4. Click on the additional "Course Design" option
5. In the new screen that appears, select either "Buttons" or "Text"
6. Hit "Submit" at the bottom of the page

6. Once you're finished choosing your color options, hit "Submit" at the bottom of the page

There are two ways you can create quizzes and tests in Blackboard:

1. You can create quizzes/tests through the "Test Manager," which is found in the control panel.
2. You can create quizzes/tests "on-the-spot" right within a content area, a folder, or a learning unit of your course. These instructions explain both options. One way isn't necessarily easier or faster than the other; they are very similar.

 

 

Create a Quiz from the "Test Manager"

Create a Quiz from a Content Area

Go to the "Control Panel"    Click on the "Test Manager" link    Click "Add Test"    Give your test a name, a description, and a set of instructions, and then hit "Submit"    Use the dropdown menu at the top of the screen that appears to choose the type of question you want for Question #1 (e.g., True/False, multiple choice, etc.)    Hit the "Go" button adjacent to the dropdown menu    In the new screen that appears, type in your question text, the point value for the question, the correct answer for the question, and any optional feedback you'd like your students to see when they get the answer right or wrong; then hit "Submit"    Add additional questions to your test by repeating steps 5-7 as many times as appropriate    When you're finished adding questions, click "OK" at the end of your test    To "deploy" your test (that is, to make it "live" for your students), you need to go to the exact place in your course where you want the quiz/test to live; to do this, click "OK" at the bottom of the "Test Manager" screen to return to the control panel    Click on the link in the control panel that will allow you to enter the content area where you want your test to live (note: if you want your quiz to live inside a specific folder or learning unit within that content area, then you need to open up that folder or learning unit first and get inside it)    Once you're exactly where you want your test to be, click on the "Test" icon/link at the top of your screen    In the new page that appears, locate the "Select an existing test" textbox, and click on the name of the text that you want to deploy; then hit "Submit"    Hit "OK" at the next screen    Click on the "Modify Test Options" link    Under the "Test Availability" section of the new page that appears, click "Yes" next to the "Do you want to make the link visible" option    In that same area, check the box next to the item that reads "Force Completion"    Fill out the rest of the page as you wish; make sure, however, that you don't choose the option that only gives a student one question at a time; currently, that option does not work properly    When you're finished selecting all your settings, hit the "Submit" button at the bottom of the page    Hit the "OK" buttons until you back out to the main content area view

That depends on whether or not the quiz has already been taken by some students. If it hasn't yet been taken by students, then you may delete it by going into the "Test Manager" (e.g., Control Panel è Test Manager), and hitting the "Remove" button adjacent to the quiz/test you would like to remove. If the test has already been taken by students, then you need to enter the content area where the quiz/test lives and remove the test by clicking on the "Remove" button associated with the quiz in that area.

Yes. Blackboard allows you to modify quizzes and tests after they've gone live. Blackboard says that you are only allowed to modify the language of specific questions on a live exam.

The easiest way to modify a quiz is to go into the control panel, click on the "Test Manager" link, and click on the "Modify" button next to the particular quiz/test you would like to alter. Make sure you carefully read Blackboard's warning about modifying live exams (this warning will not appear if your exam is not yet available for students to take).

To modify the settings for a quiz (for example, settings such as allowing students to take quizzes multiple times, password protecting a quiz, turning a quiz "on," allowing students to see a full graded copy of their quiz after they've taken it, etc.),

1. Go to the link in the control panel that will allow you to enter the content area where you want your test to live (note: if you want your quiz to live inside a specific folder or learning unit within that content area, then you need to open up that folder or learning unit first and get inside it).
2. Once you see your quiz link on the screen before you, click on the "Modify" button adjacent to that quiz link.
3. Next, click on the "Modify Test Options" link
4. Review the page, make the adjustments to it that you want, and then hit the "Submit" button at the bottom of your screen.

If you want all the questions of your quiz to have the same point value, but you would rather not have to type in this point value individually for every question, then do the following:

1. Follow the steps outlined above for creating a quiz/exam.
2. Before you choose the type of your first question, click on the link that reads "Creation Settings" (this link is found right next to the "Add Question" dropdown menu field).
3. Place a check in the box next to the option that reads "specific default point values for questions"
4. In the field next to that box, type in the desired number value for each question in the quiz
5. Hit the "Submit" button
6. Hit "OK"
7. Continue to create your quiz as usual

Yes. To access this view,

1. Enter the gradebook (Control Panel è Gradebook)
2. Click on the name/title of the quiz/exam in question
3. Select the "Assessment Attempt Details" link
4. When finished viewing the detailed results displayed on the screen, hit the "OK" button as many times as needed in order to back out to the gradebook again

   1.     Resetting a quiz/exam must be done from within the online gradebook. To reset a quiz/exam, first go to the "Control Panel" - "Gradebook."
   2.    Next, hover your cursor over the individual numerical score (or symbol) associated with a student's quiz/exam. That numerical score (or symbol) is a link. Click on it.
   3.    Clicking on the link will take you to an abbreviated "View Grades" page for that student's quiz. Click on the "View" button in the right-hand column of the screen.
   4.    Doing so will open up a copy of the exam for that student. Once a copy of the student's exam is open for you on the screen, locate the "Clear Attempt" button in the upper right-hand corner of the screen, and click on it. Clicking on this button will allow the student to re-enter that exam and re-take it.

The only way to move the same exam from one course to another or from one location to another is to create a POOL. Pools can be exported between courses and pools can be used to create a second exam or quiz that looks just like the first within the same course. I'd recommend creating everything first as a pool (or taking old exams and creating a pool from them) so that you have maximum flexibility.

You can copy your existing questions from tests to pools.  

1. Create a new pool
2. When you go to add the first question, choose "From a question pool or assessment."
3. Choose the appropriate exam to copy from
4. Check 'ALL.'
5. Click submit

The instructions for this task may vary depending on how you rename your main navigation buttons/links; however, starting from your default settings, you would do the following (note that you don't necessarily have to be in the control panel to set up a class discussion; discussions can be set up from the "front view" of your course):

1. Click on the "Communication" main menu button/link of your course (or, if you have a "Discussion Board" main link available to you, you can go ahead and click on that)
2. Click on the "Discussion Boards" link
3. Click on the "Add Forum" link at the top of the page
4. In the new screen that appears, give your discussion a title and a description
5. Next, designate the settings you would like for this particular forum (note that these settings may be changed and modified later if need be)
6. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and hit "Submit"
7. You should see your new forum before you. Because students are often reluctant to post the first message to a forum, you should do that for them. Click on the name of the forum to enter it
8. Once inside the forum, click on the "Add New Thread" button in the top left-hand corner of your screen
9. In the message form that appears, fill out the subject line and then type your message in the open textbox
10. When finished, scroll down to the bottom of the page, and hit the "Submit" button
11. Click the "OK" button at the next screen to back on out to the forum level of the discussion board

1. Enter the forum in question by clicking on the name of the forum itself
2. Click on the subject line of the message you want to read and respond to. (Note: You can't respond to a message unless it is open on the page before you, and so you have to open the message first)
3. The message should now be visible on your screen; locate the "Reply" button adjacent it, and click on it
4. In the message form that appears, fill out the subject line and then type your response in the open textbox
5. When finished, scroll down to the bottom of the page, and hit the "Submit" button

1. Enter the discussion forum in question
2. Locate the small "Expand All" link in the upper right-hand corner of the new page that appears, and click on it
3. You should see an expanded menu of icons appear at the top of your page. Some of these read "Select All," "Unselect," "Invert," etc. Click on the "Select All" icon (or, alternatively, manually place a check mark in the empty box next to each message you want to read)
4. Now click on the "Collect" icon. What you should get after doing this is a long list of all the messages you selected, open and available for reading on the page before you

No. If an item isn't set up to accept grades of a certain type (e.g., percentages, letters, point values, etc.), then you cannot enter that type of a grade into the grade field for each student (you can, but the grade won't take; it'll remain blank). In other words, the settings of the item must be reconfigured to accept that kind of grading first. To do this,

1. Enter the gradebook (Control Panel è Gradebook)
2. Click on the name/title of the gradable item in question
3. Select the "Item Information" link
4. In the "Display As" box, use the dropdown menu to change the default option from whatever you don't want it to be, to whatever you want it to be (e.g., letters to scores, letters to percentages, percentages to letters, etc.)
5. Hit the "Submit" button
6. Hit the "OK" button twice in succession to return to the gradebook
7. Now you can go ahead and enter scores for that particular item according to the grade type you've set for it (e.g., letter grades, percentages, point values, etc.)

1.    From within the gradebook, hover your cursor over the individual numerical score that a student has earned for a particular quiz/exam. That numerical score is actually a link. Click on it.
2.    Clicking on the link will take you to an abbreviated "View Grades" page for that student's quiz. You have two options here: (1) you can manually type in a revised score for the student in to the appropriate grade field and hit "Submit," or (2) you can click on the "View" button in the right-hand column of the screen. Doing so will open up a copy of the exam for that student. From this point, you may alter the points that your student earned for each question on the exam, thus overriding the automatic point value that you assigned each question when setting up the exam to begin with. When finished, simply keep hitting "Submit" and "OK" when prompted until you get taken back out to the complete gradebook view.

From within the gradebook, follow the same steps outlined in the answer above. Scores previously entered into the empty grade box for a particular student may be deleted and a new score put in its place.

1. Go into the "Control Panel"
2. Click on the "Gradebook" link
3. Locate the name of the item you would like to input grades for (e.g., "Paper #1" or "Homework Assignment"), and click on that name (the name is a link).
4. Next, click on the "Item Grade List" link.
5. In the empty grade box adjacent to each student's name, insert a numerical score for that student.
6. Once you're finished entering all your scores (you may leave some boxes blank if students haven't submitted that assignment yet), hit "Submit."

All three of these symbols can mean one of the following options:

• Either there is an essay question on an exam that Blackboard cannot grade that Blackboard is asking you to grade (to grade it, simply click on the symbol itself to call up the student's test)
• Or the student is still in the middle of taking his/her exam and has not yet submitted it for your review
• Or the student, for some reason, got locked out of the exam while in the process of taking it, and the exam needs to be reset in order for the student to be able to re-take it (see next question for details).

Clicking on this button will allow the student to re-enter that exam and re-take it.

Once inside the gradebook, locate the "Add Item" option in the upper left-hand corner of your screen. Fill in the information required of you, and hit "Submit" and then "OK."

1. Locate the "Manage Items" button at the top of the gradebook.
2. In the new screen that appears, click on the "Modify" button adjacent to the item you would like to modify.
3. Make your modifications to the item as you see fit, and hit "Submit."
4. Keep hitting the "OK" button until you're taken back out to the complete gradebook view.

1. Locate the "Manage Items" button at the top of the gradebook.
2. In the new screen that appears, click on the "Modify" button adjacent to the item you would like to modify.
3. Choose between Letter, percentage, complete/incomplete, score or text in "Display As".
4. Keep hitting the "OK" button until you're taken back out to the complete gradebook view.

1. Locate the "Manage Items" button at the top of the gradebook.
2. In the new screen that appears, click on the "Remove" button adjacent to the item you would like to remove.
3. Click the "OK" button until you're taken back out to the complete gradebook view.

NOTE: You cannot remove Blackboard-generated quizzes and assignments through this method until you first delete those items from the content area/s in which they live.

Yes. To weight grades, click on the "Weight Grades" button at the top of your gradebook. At the next screen, enter a percentage value for each item (or for each category of item), making sure that the total percentage points for all items equals 100. Once finished, click "Submit" and then "OK."

Yes. You have many options in terms of how you view the gradebook. All of the options are located near the top of your gradebook. There are filtering options to the top left of your gradebook, there are sorting options to the top right of your gradebook, and there is a "Manage Items" option in the top row of your gradebook. These options, in combination, allow you some discretion over how to view the online gradebook.

To export your online gradebook to Excel, locate the "Download Grades" option at the top of your screen, and click on it. In the screen that appears, you will be given specific instructions on how to continue the process from here. It might be a good idea to print out these instructions before proceeding further.

Students may access their own online gradebook by selecting the "Tools" main menu button, and then the "View Grades" option. Students only see their own grades; they do not see the grades of other students in the course.

Yes. The Blackboard gradebook accepts point values, percentages, and letter grades as valid grading options. Blackboard will also allow you to grade, say, Assignment A using a letter grades and Assignment B using percentages.

Because Blackboard-generated quizzes are always graded on a point value system, when a student completes a quiz, his/her grade, by default, appears as a numerical score. You can change that by doing the following:

1. Enter the gradebook ("Control Panel" è "Gradebook")
2. Click on the name of the quiz or test in question
3. Select the option that reads "Item Information"
4. In the dropdown menu next to the "Display As" field, change the default setting to read either "Percentage" or "Letter"
5. Hit "Submit" at the bottom of the page, and then hit the "OK" button twice in succession to return to the gradebook view
6. All the scores for that particular quiz should now reflect either a percentage or a letter grade

To do this, set up the item as follows:

1.    Enter the gradebook ("Control Panel" è "Gradebook")
2.    Click on the "Add Item" button in the top left-hand corner of the page
3.    Fill out the name, category, and description for the item to be added
4.    Indicate a point value for the item
5.    In the dropdown menu next to the "Display As" field, change the default setting to read either "Percentage" or "Letter"
6.    Hit "Submit" at the bottom of the page, and then hit the "OK" button twice in succession to return to the gradebook view
7.    Note: When you go to enter grades for that particular item, you need to use letter grades if you set the "Display As" option to "Letter," and, likewise, you need to enter percentages if you set the "Display As" option to "Percentage."

Yes. To do so

1. Enter the gradebook (Control Panel è Gradebook)
2. Click on the name/title of the item whose scores you want to change
3. Select the "Item Information" link
4. In the "Display As" box, use the dropdown menu to change the default option from whatever you don't want it to be, to whatever you want it to be (e.g., letters to scores, letters to percentages, percentages to letters, etc.)
5. Hit the "Submit" button
6. Hit the "OK" button twice in succession to return to the gradebook

2. Click on the "Gradebook Settings" option at the top of the gradebook
3. Click on the "Manage Display Options" link
4. Click the "Modify" button on the right-hand side of the screen adjacent to the "Letter" category
5. Read the instructions provided by Blackboard and change any default settings as you see fit
6. When finished, hit the "Submit" button at the bottom of the page, and click on the "OK" buttons to back out to the gradebook again

Yes. Blackboard allows instructors to enter test scores for students even if those students haven't actually taken the test in question. There are various ways to do this. Here is one way:

1.   Enter the gradebook (Control Panel è Gradebook)

2.   Hover your cursor over the dash ("-") that represents the "not-yet-available" test grade for the particular student in question

3.   Click on that dash ("-")

4.   In the next screen that appears, manually type in a grade for that particular student's test (NOTE: if you've changed the grade display type for this test to reveal, say, a letter grade instead of a point value, then you need to enter a letter grade for that student and not a point value)

5.   Hit "Submit"

Once a student submits an assignment, that student will not be able to go back and make changes to his/her submission without the instructor wiping out the old attempt first. To wipe out that old attempt,

1. Follow the instructions outlined above for viewing and grading a student's assignment
2. Once you arrive at the screen where you're able to click on the student's uploaded file, look for the button in the middle of the screen that reads "Clear attempt."
3. Click on that button.

1. Start by going to the "Control Panel"
2. Enter the content area, folder, or learning unit where you want your assignment to "live."
3. At the top of your screen, you should see a variety of buttons and icons (e.g., "Item," "Folder," "URL," etc.). At the far top right of your screen, you should see a dropdown window with the words "Learning Unit" in it. Click on that dropdown menu and then, in the expanded list that appears, click on the word "Assignment."
4. Click on the "Go" button to the right of the dropdown menu (which now reads "Assignment")
5. In the new page that appears, give your assignment a name
6. Next, give your assignment a point value (this point value will be reflected in the course gradebook)
7. Provide instructions for your assignment in the "Instructions" field
8. Fill out the rest of the form, including the section on "Assignment Attachments" if you'd like to attach a file to your assignment
9. Finally, hit the "Submit" button at the bottom of the screen
10. Your completed assignment will consist of a set of instructions with a link entitled "View/Complete" at the bottom of it. As an instructor, you can practice completing your own assignment by clicking on the "View/Complete" button.

You have to go to the online gradebook to view and grade these kinds of assignments. Here are the general steps involved (some details may be different depending on how you set up your assignment):

1.    Go to the "Control Panel"
2.    Click on "Gradebook" link
3.    Locate the assignment you would like to grade by scrolling through your gradebook. You will notice that each completed assignment in that column is indicated by an exclamation mark. Assignments need to be graded individually, and so you need to click on each exclamation mark individually to view and grade each student's work (see below for an extra tip on mass downloading assignment attachments).
4.    Click on your first exclamation mark
5.    The screen that appears will display details about the assignment submitted. Click on the "View" button next to that information
6.    You should now see a carbon copy of the assignment. The student's assignment should appear as a linked document under the "Student's Work" section. If the student added any hand-typed comments about his/her work, those should appear here too. Click on the document to read through the student's work.
7.    Once you've reviewed the assignment, type a score for that student into the appropriate field under the "Feedback to Student" section. You may also add individual comments here for that student (and/or add a separate document that has feedback on it). All of this information will be seen by the student.
8.    At the bottom of the page, locate the "Instructor Notes" section. This is a place for you to add your own private comments and remarks about the student's work. These comments are for you. They will not be visible to the student.
9.    Once you are finished filling out this page, click the "Submit" button at the bottom of the page.
10.    Keep hitting the "Submit" and "OK" buttons that follow until you are taken back out to the main gradebook view.

Blackboard’s assignment feature allows students an easy way to submit assignments online. Assignments that are set up using Blackboard’s assignment feature are automatically entered as items into the gradebook for the course, just like quizzes and tests. Instructors grade assignments from within the gradebook and are able to offer individual feedback easily.

Blackboard’s assignment feature is designed for assignments to be submitted via attached documents. Although it is true that when students click to complete an assignment, they are presented with a small textbox field in which they could, conceivably, type out their assignment answers, this textbox field is not designed to be used in that manner. It only accepts so many characters (roughly 3000), and so it is designed for short notes and comments. Long responses, therefore, need to be submitted via a file attachment.

Yes. Linked documents may be downloaded all at once by doing the following:

1. From within the gradebook, locate the assignment in question, and click on its title/name
2. You should now see an extra list of options associated with this item; click on the link in the list that reads "Item download"
3. A new screen with a list of all your students will appear. Students who have submitted an attached document to the gradebook will have an open checkbox next to their name. Select all the students whose documents you want to download, and then hit the "Submit" button at the bottom of the page.
4. You should now see a message that reads "Your assignments have been exported." What Blackboard has done is extracted all those linked attachments and zipped them up into one file for you to download (note: although you will be downloading them; you will not be removing them from Blackboard; you will only be downloading a copy of them). Click on the download link provided, and save the zipped file to your desktop.
5. Click on the "Ok" button as many times as you need to in order to back out to the gradebook view.
6. Minimize Blackboard, and click on the zipped file on your desktop to "unzip" it. Save the contents of this file to a new folder on your hard drive.
7. Once unzipped, all your students' documents will be available for you in one place to view.

Note: if a student submitted a comment to you in the open textbox field offered by the assignment feature, then those comments will be downloaded in this export process as well. Such comments will show up as separate text files, unattached to the other documents submitted by that particular student.

Yes, but there's really no reason for you to. In other words, unlike Blackboard's digital drop box where old files had to be removed because all files for every assignment dumped into the same place, the assignment feature keeps documents associated with each task separate from each other. If you want to mass delete all linked documents associated with an assignment, however, you can do so by doing the following:

1.      Click on the name of the assignment from within the gradebook
2.      Click on the "Item File Cleanup" link
3.      You should now see a list of all the file attachments associated with that particular assignment (all your student files as well as all files you may have sent back to your students when grading their work)
4.      Click on the link at the top of the page that will allow you to delete the files you would like to get rid of (or, alternatively, place a check next to each item that you would like to delete)
5.      Hit the "Submit" button at the bottom of the page

Turn Off the Visual Text Box Editor (if you are a Windows Vista & Internet Explorer 7 user) if you cannot see the textbox to type Discussion Board postings, Quiz Essays, Item Descriptions or Announcements, you should turn off the Visual Text Box Editor in your personal preferences:

A Blackboard learning unit allows an instructor to create a structured pathway for students to progress through course content. The instructor can create this learning unit as a self-paced, sequential learning experience. From within the learning unit students can be pointed towards external pages taking them to classroom discussions, external web pages, and quizzes, yet still be moving within the learning unit. To create a learning unit from within your Blackboard course:

1.    Click on the course Control Panel and enter the content area where the learning unit will reside.
2.    In the top, right-hand corner of screen, there is a box that has the words "Learning Unit" in it; click on the "Go" button next to that box.
3.    In the next screen that appears, give your learning unit a name and a description.
4.    Under the "Options" section of that same screen, indicate whether students will be forced to move through the learning unit in sequential fashion or whether they will have the option of skipping around the learning unit (we recommend the latter option).
5.    Hit "Submit" at the bottom of the page.
6.    To add pages to the unit, click on the underlined title of the new learning unit itself.
7.    Once inside the learning unit, click on the "Item" button at the top of the screen to add your first page to the unit.
8.    Keep proceeding in this manner until you have as many pages as your learning unit requires.

Note: The pages of your learning unit are going to appear one on top of each other from the control panel view of the unit (that is, they will be presented in vertical fashion). You won't see the pages presented in their proper horizontal format until you go back out to the front of your course and view the learning unit from the student perspective.

All new courses, by default, are turned "off." That means, they're unavailable to your students. To turn a course on

1. Enter the "Control Panel" of that specific course
2. Click on the "Settings" link in the lower-left hand module of the control panel
3. Click on the "Course Availability" link
4. Click the radio button next to "Yes"
5. Click "Submit"

Blackboard allows you to create student groups of any size. These student groups can have access to their own discussion board, collaboration tools, file sharing options, and group email listservs. To create a group from within your Blackboard course:

1. Start by going into the Control Panel.
2. Under the "User Management" module in the upper right-hand corner, click on the link that reads "Manage Groups."
3. Click on the "Add Group" button.
4. Type in a name for your group and assign the group the kinds of interactive features you would like group members to have access to
5. Click "Submit."
6. Click "OK."
7. To add students to a group, click on the "Modify" button associated with your new group and then on the "Add Users to Group" link.
8. Search for all the students in your class, and then select the ones that should be added to your group.
9. Hit "Submit."
10. You can find your new group under the Communication Button on the course navigation bar; it is under the link entitled "Group Pages"

To access the official roster for the course

1. Go to the "Control Panel"
2. Click on the "List/Modify Users" link
3. Click on the "Search" button to reveal an updated list of everyone enrolled in your course
