Cleanroom Service

If you are having trouble getting your computer connected to the network, Oxford's cleanroom service can help you. Please bring your computer to the Oxford College Information Technology CleanRoom in the Jolley Residential Center lobby for assistance. When bringing your computer to the Clean Room the following items are required:

A computer must:

  • turn on
  • start-up with Windows Vista or XP
  • have a functioning Ethernet or wireless hardware
  • display the desktop screen in English
  • have its original system setup disks (operating system and hardware drivers)

If these requirements are not met, Oxford College Information Technology is unable to connect your computer to the college network.  If you require assistance with any of these issues, it is recommended to return your computer to your vendor or commercial computer repair shop.

Please also bring the Windows/Macintosh system setup CDs and any recovery disks that came with the computer from the manufacturer.

At the clean room you will complete a service request form with your contact information and the computer's make, model, and serial number. You will leave the computer along with the power supply and all original system CDs. If you do not have the CDs, the computer will not be accepted. The computer will be serviced on a first-come, first-served basis by a technician within approximately 72 business hours.

The Clean Room staff and student employees will:

  1. Install the most recent anti-spyware utilities and antivirus software supported by Oxford.
  2. Scan the computer to verify the hard drive is free of threatening software.
  3. Uninstall any programs that may cause security risks.
  4. Configure the computer to connect to the wireless and the wired network in the residential halls.
  5. Back up all folders within the My Documents folder, if necessary. (We do not save or back up copyrighted media files.)
  6. Remove any peer-peer network applications.
  7. Update and patch the operating system.

The Clean Room staff and student employees are unable to:

  • Repair hard drives.
  • Recover lost files.
  • Reinstall operating systems without the original disks
  • Solve hardware issues
  • Install or update device drivers
  • Fix broken software

In these situations, we recommend that you contact your computer vendor or a local PC repair shop to handle these issues.
