Request for Commuter Status

The philosophy of Oxford College is that students benefit most by living on campus, eating together in the dining hall, attending campus events, having late-night conversations with their roommates, and participating in campus life beyond the classroom. Therefore, students are required to live on campus.

Receiving permission to commute is an exception to this requirement and is granted on a case-by-case basis.

Students must have a complete and submitted housing application on file before requesting Commuter status. Commuter status requests received without completed housing applications will not be considered until a completed housing application is on file in our assignment system at https://myhousing.emory.edu.

Students new to Oxford must submit a request for Commuter Status by August 1 for a fall semester enrollment and by January 1 for a spring semester enrollment.

Requests for Commuter status will only be considered for students who are able to reside with parent(s) or legal guardian(s) within the local area.

The initial request for Commuter status must be submitted via the students MyHousing account. If the initial request is deemed feasible, the student will receive an email with further instructions on how to apply for commuter status. Note: the initial request deemed feasible does not mean that the request for Commuter status is approved.

Please note: Mid-year requests are RARELY granted except with documentation of significant extenuating circumstances.

Commuter status requests based on medical reasons must have information registered with the Office of Access, Disability Services, and Resources.

Commuter status requests based on financial reasons must have medium to high "need" information on file in the Office of Enrollment Services.

Commuter requests will not be considered based on roommate dissatisfaction. The RES staff will work with the student to help develop a more positive living experience or consider other on-campus accommodations.
