Oxford celebrates the holidays, semester end with traditions

With a little more than two weeks left until the end of the academic year, Oxford College welcomes the return of several holiday-themed festivities.

The calendar fills with a variety of activities, performances, and observances, many of which are long-standing Oxford traditions.

Events include:

Southern Folk Advent
Saturday, Dec. 1, at 4:00 p.m. in the city of Oxford’s Old Church, Wesley Street at Fletcher Street.
Meridian Herald presents its 26th annual Southern Folk Advent service. This year's service includes bluegrass-gospel music from fiddler and singer Leah Calvert and the Dappled Grays, reflections from Brooks Holifield of Emory’s Candler School of Theology, and Sacred Harp tunes from the Meridian Chorale and soloists. Admission is free and no tickets are required. Oxford's Pierce Program in Religion is a sponsor of this event.
Voices of Praise Gospel Choir Winter Concert
Tuesday, Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m. in Tarbutton Theater. Students will transform Tarbutton into a winter wonderland for a night of music and holiday fun. There will be cookie decorating, hot cocoa, and holiday crafts hosted by student groups including Voices of Praise, Wesley Fellowship, Oxford Fellowship, Journey Christian Fellowship, and the Catholic Student Union.
Jewish Student Union Hanukkah Event
Thursday, Dec. 6, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in the Rathskeller, Candler Hall Student Center. The Jewish Student Union invites Oxford students to a Hanukkah celebration.
Oxford Chorale Holiday Concert
Thursday, Dec. 6, and Friday, Dec. 7, at 8:00 p.m. in Oxford College Chapel. The concert, directed by Maria Archetto, features the Oxford Chorale and Oxford Chamber Ensemble. Tickets are $5 per person and are available at the Student Center and at the door 30 minutes before the concert.
Oxford Dance Company's Fall Concert
Monday, Dec. 10, at 8:00 p.m. in Williams Hall. The performance, directed by Alejandro Abarca, features student choreographed work and will include the hip hop team of the Asian Fusion Dance Team as special guests. Abarca will present a small excerpt of his latest work "My People." Doors will open at 7:30 p.m.
Oxappella Winter Concert
Tuesday, Dec. 11, at 6:30 p.m. in Oxford College Chapel. Oxford’s student a cappella group will present their annual end-of-year performance.
Fun Before Finals
Tuesday, Dec. 11, from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. Oxford’s Student Activities Committee will host this event for students to enjoy a night of ice skating, along with treats of hot cocoa and cider.
Midnight Pancake Breakfast
Tuesday, Dec. 11, from 10:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. in the dining hall. This long-time tradition marks the end of every semester with a late night meal before each Reading Day–the transition day between the end of classes and the first day of final exams. Faculty and staff serve pancakes and other late-night fare to students at this event hosted by the SGA Food Committee and Bon Appétit.
Holiday Wrapping Party
Wednesday, Dec. 12, at 1:00 p.m. in the Rathskeller, Candler Hall Student Center. On Oxford’s Reading Day, Volunteer Oxford will host a party where students will wrap gifts donated by Oxford faculty and staff for Newton County families in need. The event will also include cookies, a photo booth, and a letter-writing station. Volunteer Oxford is a student-led initiative that connects local service agencies and willing Oxford student volunteers.
Stress Busters
Wednesday, Dec. 12, from noon to 4:00 p.m. The Healthy Eagle peer educators will host an afternoon filled with pet therapy, mindfulness, and play to help students prepare for finals.

Final exams begin on Thursday, Dec. 13, and conclude on Wednesday, Dec. 19. Following their winter break, Oxford students will return for the start of spring semester 2019 classes on Tuesday, January 15.
