Oxford Observes Earth Day

April 18, 2012

College has long observed Earth Day and 2012 is no exception.  To celebrate the 42nd anniversary of this special day, a variety of activities are being offered around the campus to encourage sustainable living.

Beginning April 19, Emory Dining will host a Zumba fitness demo to celebrate health awareness at 5:00 pm on the quad.  On Friday, April 20, student groups CLC, Oxford Pride, SAC, and the Oxford Sustainability Subcommittee will collaborate to host a carnival fundraiser supporting autism spectrum disorders, a Day of Silence to raise awareness about LGBT issues, and a Mama Earth Hippie Rally to celebrate Earth Day.  The carnival will begin at 3:00 pm and will feature  fun that will raise support for a worthy cause.  Also on hand to participate in the activities will be Zipcar, a car-sharing service that reduces the need for car ownership, and the King of Pops, maker of handmade gourmet popsicles using fresh local ingredients.  Pops will be given away to the first 250 guests courtesy of Zipcar.

As students wrap up another successful year on campus, and prepare to move out of the residence halls in May, the Don't Dump It Donate It! waste diversion initiative encourages students to donate unwanted personal items instead of throwing them in the trash.  Donations will be given to Magnolia Disaster Relief to provide for the needs of families affected by the 2011 and 2012 US tornadoes and hurricanes.  Students also have an opportunity to donate books they no longer need to Better World Books.  Better World gives books a second life online by selling them through its website, and donates a portion of the proceeds to its literary partners; Books for Africa, Invisible Children, National Center for Family Literacy, Room to Read, and World Fund.

Oxford College is committed to sustainable initiatives in a variety of ways.  As a unit of Emory University, it is a partner with Emory's Office of Sustainability Initiatives.
