Alumni Spotlight: Partners in Purpose: The Arrendales’ Lasting Impact on Oxford

Chris Arrendale was destined to attend Oxford College. "My grandmother told me the only way to be successful in life was to go to Emory University and either become a doctor or a lawyer," says Chris. "I came here without ever visiting the campus because I knew that having the Oxford experience and Emory degree meant that I would succeed. Little did I know that Oxford College would be the best two years of my life."

A Pathway to Service
While Amanda did not attend Oxford or Emory, Chris likes to say that Oxford "adopted" her. She recalls visiting his alma mater soon after they started dating. "Everything about the campus was so welcoming and warm; it's just such a community-focused place," says Amanda. Shortly afterward, she and Chris volunteered for the first time for Emory Cares, an annual day of service that supports local community initiatives and programs. "The campus has changed since 2008, when I first got involved, but the sense of community remains. The educational and other experiences and opportunities are phenomenal."
Chris credits some of the opportunities he had at Oxford with his success in business, his philanthropic spirit, and his positive outlook on life.
"On day one, you are given so many ways to pursue your dreams. Working together with other classmates from all cultures and countries also helps prepare you for life and your career."
The small class size and the ability to jump into leadership roles also helped prepare him to transition to Emory.
Former Oxford Professor Bill Cody, whom he remembers as an amazing speaker, teacher, and mentor, inspired him in political science courses, and Chris fondly remembers working with Rodger Brunson in the Oxford Dining Hall when he chaired the Food Committee. He also enjoyed playing basketball late at night with friends, hanging out in Dooley's Tavern, serving on SGA and as president of Dooley's Dolls, and holding a work/study job at the gym.

Chris and former classmates reunite.
“I have so many friends from Oxford that are still good friends today,” says Chris. One of those good friends is Keith Burns, another highly successful Oxford graduate, who will be the keynote speaker at Oxford's 2025 Commencement ceremony.
A Spirit of Generosity
As active and influential supporters of Oxford, Chris and Amanda never stop giving. Amanda currently serves on the Oxford Board of Counselors, and Chris is a former Oxford College Alumni Board president and Emory Alumni Board member. They have co-chaired Emory Cares, named two spaces in the Student Center, named a space in the Science Building, pledged a planned gift, and currently participate in the ATL 2O36 campaign. Chris is the recipient of the William L. Norton Oxford College Alumni Board (OCAB) Outstanding Alumnus award and Amanda received the OCAB Honorary Alumna award.
"Chris and Amanda embody the best of alumni engagement and philanthropy. Not only do they give generously of their time, resources, and energy, they help move the college forward with their expertise and sage counsel," says Kevin Smyrl, associate dean of Advancement and Alumni Engagement."
Mentorship and a spirit of generosity are themes that run throughout the Arrendale's philanthropy and service. "Oxford students are very ambitious and curious, and the passion they bring is amazing," says Chris. Adds Amanda, "I have worked with a number of young entrepreneurs at Oxford. I don't know if you'd get those opportunities at other schools."

Chris and Amanda enjoy an Oxford reunion.
"Giving back to Oxford and Emory is very important in our lives," says Chris. "Our hope is that we inspire others to volunteer their time and resources. If Oxford meant a lot to you, giving back fulfills you as a person."
