Humanities at Oxford College

At Oxford College, humanities education isn't simply about great books and lofty concepts—it challenges you to ask better questions, apply theories to life outside the classroom, and originate ideas. Through our innovative PATHS program, you'll connect classroom learning directly to real-world impact while working closely with faculty mentors who know your name and your goals.

In our close-knit learning community of just 1,000 students, you'll engage in faculty-mentored research, contribute to community and arts initiatives, and build skills in communication, creativity, and analysis that will distinguish you when you continue to Emory's Atlanta campus and beyond.

What Makes Oxford Humanities Distinctive?

At Oxford College, humanities education gives you an unmistakable edge. Our professors actively bridge timeless inquiry with contemporary career readiness, ensuring that alongside engaging with foundational texts and transformative ideas, you'll gain practical competencies that prepare you for whatever path you choose after graduation.

PATHS Discovery Seminars are our new selection of courses launching Fall 2025. Building on Oxford's established Discovery Seminar tradition (offered since 2012), PATHS (Professional Advancement Through Humanities Study) creates a unique cohort experience where you'll tackle urgent present-day challenges through courses like "Leadership in Ancient Greece and Rome" or "Adaptation and Storytelling."

How to Get Involved

Humanities courses at Oxford develop the critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and cultural competency that professional programs actively seek. When you analyze complex texts, engage diverse perspectives, and explore ethical frameworks, you're building the exact skills medical schools, law schools, and business programs value most.

Your coursework creates a direct pathway to professional success: literary analysis strengthens the reasoning abilities medical schools require, historical research develops the analytical skills law schools prize, and cross-cultural studies build the global awareness business programs demand.

Discover how specific humanities competencies align with professional requirements, then connect with advisors to design your personalized pre-professional pathway.

Faculty who major in you

Sure, Oxford faculty write books and win prizes. But what they like to do most—and what they do best—is teach. Oxford faculty are nationally recognized for their commitment to teaching, and they lead faculty at other institutions in exploring best practices in college classrooms.
